The Danger of Comparison

Everyone has their own life to live, I can’t live yours for you, and you can’t live mine for me. We each have a path, a purpose that God has carved out for us. In today’s society, it’s easy to be thwarted from your path by what you see on social media and what’s praised in your social circles. (First of all, if your social circles make you feel insecure you’re in the wrong circle.)

No matter what influences come to knock you off of your God ordained path, remember God is your ultimate leader, not man.

Even though God has a purpose for our lives, he gives each of us free will to decide how we will execute that purpose. God tells us to not envy each other (Proverbs 14:30) (Genesis 37: Story of Jacob) , it’s ok for others to achieve. The success of others’ doesn’t diminish your worth. He wants you to strive to be your best, but you can’t do that comparing your progress to others. You can’t eat, because you’re trying to take food from someone else’s plate. WE CAN ALL EAT! You need to measure your progress by God’s standards, not man!

You’re not where people think you should be socially, but you’re where you need to be spiritually.

#MinistryMoment

In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus and his disciples were welcomed into the home of Mary and Martha. When Jesus entered, Mary sat at his feet and listened to his teachings. Meanwhile Martha was distracted by a dinner she was trying to prepare. She became upset and asked Jesus, “Doesn’t it seem unfair that my sister sits here while I work. Make her come help me.” Jesus responded with, There is only one thing to be worried about and Mary has discovered it! Mary knew how important Jesus was and put everything aside for him. Martha, instead of sitting at his feet as well, she continued with her work and became envious of her sister. Martha focusing on Mary diverted her from Jesus, she missed her blessing being worried about something else.

So, which one are you, Martha or Mary?

The moral of the story is to stay in your lane. You can’t see what God has for you, looking at everyone else. Like my mama always said, ”If everyone else jumped off a bridge would you do it too?”

Comparison: Business Perspective

In the business world everyone is comparing their company to other companies. “How can we be better than them?” “How can we sell more than them?” This tactic may seem beneficial, but it can be detrimental to success. Yes there’s nothing wrong with looking at what’s going on around you, but your calling needs to be your main focus. You can’t reach the goals specialized for you because you’re too busy trying to meet everyone else’s standards. For example, let’s say, in your business, God called you to sell a certain product, but you didn’t because you were worried the competition had just released a new product and you feared they would overshadow you. You just missed out on a blessing right there. When God develops a plan no one can stop it (Isaiah 14:27). Yes they’re succeeding, but you have no idea what God has in store for you.

How to Focus on What God Has For You:

  1. Pray. Prayer is a conversation with God, an exchange. You can talk to him, but allow him to talk to you, listen to him.
  2. Read your bible. God has blessed us with a book of instructions for how we should live and handle situations and much more. Study your bible and apply it to your life.
  3. Self-care. Take care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. When you start lacking in these areas, you begin to look around you and become envious. Then ask questions like “Why don’t I look like that?” and “Why can’t I have that?” start to form. Focus on yourself and you can prevent that!.
  4. Be aware of the things and the people that you let into your space. This can range from people to the type of music you listen to. Everything in your environment affects you.

Conclusion

Stop looking for the applause of men. Look for the approval of God! This applies in your personal life and in your business. Learn to look towards God and the bible for references, not man. You can’t see your own greatness because you’re so busy looking at someone else.  Secure people take reverence in God and their blessings. Insecure people fight for the blessings they already have!
